CEO Dirk Meyer had previously suggested such a CPU would hit in November, before being contradicted by Chief Marketing Officer Nigel Dessau, so presumably the company had a change of heart.
Is this AMD's rival to Atom?
The supposed chip will focus on two of the areas where netbooks have, to this point, still struggled a bit; namely video playback performance and battery life. Reports suggest AMD is aiming for an eight to nine hour battery life while still offering better performance that its rival, Intel's Atom CPU.
Should such claims be borne out it will be interesting to see what Intel does to counter. Dual-core Atom systems are expected to hit some time soon, although they're not necessarily intended for netbook-type systems. A pair of cores with Hyper Threading on top should definitely provide for some multi-tasking horsepower. Not that the average netbook user is likely to want for more performance from a single-core Atom chip, if you ask me.
Still, I definitely won't complain if we get faster chips drawing less power. No matter whose badge is branded into them.
